RoboEngineering Expo

RoboEngineering Expo™ is an annual Schoolwide or Districtwide Learning Event and an Integrated Learning Component of the RoboBlocky Curriculum.


The RoboBlocky Curriculum consists of:

  • RoboBlocky Math™ (TK–12)

  • STEAM, Computer Science, and Engineering Design with Robotics Pathways (TK–12)

  • Expanded Learning with Robotics (TK–12)


Students participating in any RoboBlocky Curriculum Program may contribute projects, demonstrations, robotics activities, challenge stations, and other learning experiences. Schools and districts may designate student leaders to serve as engineering designers, exhibitors, presenters, facilitators, and peer mentors during RoboEngineering Expo™. 


Unlike a traditional engineering fair where visitors primarily observe exhibits, RoboEngineering Expo is a student-led, teacher-guided, interactive, hands-on learning event. Students organize and host engaging engineering design and robotics experiences while developing student agency, communication, collaboration, leadership, creativity, confidence, perseverance, presentation, facilitation, and peer mentoring. Younger students, families, educators, and community members actively participate through hands-on robotics and engineering activities that inspire future learning and strengthen school-family-community partnerships.


RoboEngineering Expo also provides opportunities for students to demonstrate the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) through hands-on learning while showcasing engineering design, computational thinking, creativity, and real-world problem solving developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum. Through Engineering Design Showcase Stations, Interactive Robotics Activity Stations, Robotics Challenge Stations, and other student-led demonstrations, the Expo illustrates how learning across the curriculum comes together in meaningful ways that engage students, families, and the broader community.
 

Goals of RoboEngineering Expo

The goals of RoboEngineering Expo are to:

  • Celebrate and extend student learning developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum

  • Provide authentic opportunities for students to apply mathematics, engineering design, computer science, robotics, and computational thinking through meaningful real-world experiences

  • Provide authentic opportunities for students to Design, Build, and Program Their Own Robot Machines through engineering design projects and creative robotics experiences

  • Showcase projects, activities, engineering innovations, and student creativity developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum

  • Develop student agency, communication, collaboration, leadership, creativity, confidence, perseverance, presentation, facilitation, and peer mentoring

  • Inspire younger students through engaging hands-on robotics experiences

  • Strengthen school-family-community partnerships through interactive student-led learning experiences

  • Introduce students and families to future RoboBlocky Curriculum learning opportunities as they progress through the curriculum pathways

RoboEngineering Expo Stations

RoboEngineering Expo™ may include three kinds of stations that celebrate student learning while providing engaging, hands-on experiences for younger students, families, and the broader community. Schools and districts may adapt the number and types of stations to meet their instructional goals, grade levels, and local implementation.

1. Engineering Design Showcase Stations

Students showcase engineering design projects and other engineering innovations developed through Engineering Design with Robotics and other RoboBlocky Curriculum learning experiences. Exhibits may include student-designed robot machines, OmniBot projects, Arduino and sensor-based robotics, physical computing projects, and other student-created engineering innovations. Students explain how they Design, Build, and Program Their Own Robot Machines while applying engineering design to solve authentic real-world problems.

2. Interactive Robotics Activity Stations

Students organize and host engaging robotics activities developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum, allowing visitors to actively participate in meaningful hands-on learning experiences.

Activities may include:

  • RoboToss™ for different grade levels

  • Drive a Linkbot using a joystick

  • Drive an OmniBot using a joystick

  • Measure distances using an ultrasonic sensor

  • Mathematics-based robotics activities

  • Hands-on engineering design activities

  • Student-created robotics and engineering games

These stations demonstrate how mathematics, coding, robotics, engineering design, creativity, communication, collaboration, and real-world problem solving are integrated through engaging hands-on learning experiences.

3. Robotics Challenge Stations

Students facilitate robotics challenge stations using the Robotics Challenges for Outreach Programs curriculum. Example challenge stations include:

  • Move a Robot on the RoboCount Activity Mat

  • Move a Robot on the RoboTown Activity Mat

  • Draw with an OmniBot

  • Design and Build Your Own Robot Machines

 

These self-guided stations introduce younger students, families, and community members to coding, robotics, mathematics, engineering, and computational thinking through engaging hands-on learning experiences.​​​​

Educational Benefits

RoboEngineering Expo benefits students across the entire TK–12 RoboBlocky Curriculum. Selected students in Grades 3–12 typically serve as student leaders by organizing and hosting the Expo, while younger students participate as visitors and learners through engaging hands-on robotics and engineering experiences. Depending on local implementation, middle school and high school students may also participate as visitors to explore future RoboBlocky learning opportunities.

Selected students participating in the RoboBlocky Curriculum may serve as:

Visiting Students

 

Depending on local implementation, visiting students may include elementary, middle school, or high school students who are exploring future RoboBlocky learning opportunities. Visiting students actively participate as learners through:

  • Interactive robotics activities

  • Engineering games

  • Robotics challenge stations

  • Hands-on coding and robotics experiences

  • Engineering design exploration

These experiences inspire younger students while introducing them to future RoboBlocky Curriculum learning opportunities.

Families and Community

 

Families and community members actively participate by exploring student exhibits, playing robotics games, completing robotics challenges, and celebrating student learning and innovation. RoboEngineering Expo strengthens school-family-community partnerships while showcasing learning developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum.

Benefits for Teachers

RoboEngineering Expo™ also provides meaningful professional learning opportunities for teachers by helping them:

  • Share instructional strategies, classroom activities, engineering design projects, and robotics learning experiences

  • Learn from colleagues across grade levels, schools, and district programs

  • Exchange innovative ideas and best practices for teaching mathematics, STEAM, computer science, engineering design, and robotics

  • Strengthen vertical TK–12 curriculum alignment across the RoboBlocky Curriculum

Schoolwide and Districtwide Implementation

Schools may organize schoolwide RoboEngineering Expo events or collaborate across multiple schools to organize districtwide RoboEngineering Expo events that celebrate student learning while strengthening collaboration among teachers, students, families, and the broader community.

Schools and districts may organize RoboEngineering Expo during January and February as a Schoolwide or Districtwide Learning Event, providing an excellent opportunity to:

  • Celebrate student learning and innovation developed throughout the RoboBlocky Curriculum

  • Showcase engineering design projects, robotics activities, physical computing projects, and student created innovations

  • Develop communication, leadership, and peer mentoring

  • Engage families and the broader community through interactive engineering and robotics experiences

  • Introduce younger students and families to future RoboBlocky Curriculum learning opportunities

  • Encourage students to continue exploring RoboBlocky Math™, the STEAM, Computer Science, and Engineering Design with Robotics Pathways, Expanded Learning with Robotics, and other RoboBlocky learning opportunities as they progress through the grade levels
